The
above image shows a diagram of The Wall House by John Hejduk, completed using Google
Sketch Up. I found
that one of the most important aspects of The Wall House is the special dependence
upon the wall itself. The other elements
of the house seem to hang upon it, both physically and conceptually. From the front, the three stacked spaces
seemingly depend directly upon the wall as a backbone. So too, the rear corridor connects directly
to the wall. Those primary elements that
connect directly to the wall have been colored yellow. Secondary elements like the spiral staircase
and the fourth space have been colored in blue.
Not only do the individual elements structurally depend upon the wall,
but Hejduk's concept hangs on the wall as well.
You can read a summary of the concept of The Wall House in my second
blog post below.
The wall, representing the present,
stands between two distinct realms: the future and the past. The concept is that we move from the past to
the future through the present (the wall).
Thus, both the future and the past directly depend on the present. The above diagram demonstrates this
dependence on the present by illustrating the house's structural dependence on
the wall.
